How to create a BOGO discount?

Last updated on May 6, 2026

You can create a BOGO discount with DealUp to offer "Buy X, Get Y free" deals on single items or product groups. The offer widget appears directly on the product page. Please note that the app does not automatically add free items to the cart. Once customers add the necessary items, the specified quantity will automatically be discounted to free.

Step 1: Create an Offer with DealUp

Follow these steps to set up a new offer in DealUp:
  1. Click on BOGO option from Dashboard.

  2. Click on Create Campaign button.
  3. Select your discount type: Automatic or Code (indicated by “1” in the image below).

    • DealUp allows you to create up to 25 automatic discounts and 500 code-based discounts across all types.
    • Shopify automatically applies automatic discounts during the checkout process.
💡 Automatic discounts remain active even if the app embed is turned off. You cannot test this discount type in a draft theme because it automatically applies to your live store while active. To stop the discount, you must deactivate it manually in DealUp.

    • Our app automatically applies discount codes at checkout with DealUp.

💡 You can test code discounts in a draft theme. When the app embed is disabled in a theme, DealUp discounts will not apply there. This lets you disable the app in your live theme and enable it in a draft theme for testing.
  4. In the Title field (labeled “2” in the image), enter a name for your discount. This text will serve as the discount code that customers see and apply at checkout within DealUp.

Step 2: Selecting Eligible Products

In this section, you can select which products are eligible for the free gift offer with DealUp.

Select from these DealUp discount options:

  • All Products: Apply the discount to every product in your store. You have the option to exclude specific products, collections, or tags from this DealUp offer.

  • Specific Products: Provide a free gift only when customers purchase designated items.

  • Specific Collections: Customers receive the discount only when purchasing products from selected collections. You can also exclude specific products, collections, or tags from DealUp as needed.

Step 3: Select Customer Eligibility (Optional)

In this section, define which customers are eligible for the DealUp discount by choosing from these three options:

    • All Customers: By default, DealUp makes the discount available to every customer.

    • Specific Customers: Choose this option to offer the discount only to certain individuals. You can then browse and select specific customers from your existing list.

    • Specific Customer Tags: Choose this option to limit the discount to customers who have a specific tag assigned to them.

💡 The Customer Eligibility setting applies exclusively to automatic discounts and cannot be used with discount codes. DealUp only supports this feature for automatic discount types.

Step 4: Setting Up Product Combination Rules

Exact same products should be bought: Choose this setting if the free item must be the exact same product as the one purchased.

    • Example: For a "Buy 2, Get 1 Free" deal on T-shirts, the customer buys two units of a specific T-shirt and receives a third unit of that same T-shirt for free.

Any applicable product can be bought: Choose this setting if the free item can be any different product from your chosen list or collection.

    • Example: For a "Buy 1, Get 1 Free" deal on the Summer Collection, a customer who buys shorts can choose a T-shirt, hat, or any other item within that collection as their free gift.

Step 5: Setting the Tier Values

Setting Up Your BOGO Discount Tiers with DealUp

    • You can create up to 3 tiers for a single BOGO discount.

    • For each tier, set the number of trigger products (Pay for X quantity) customers must buy to qualify.

    • Define the number of free products (Get X quantity free) rewarded at each specific tier.

Step 6: Configure Optional Settings for DealUp

Set the maximum number of uses per order (Marked “1” in the above image)

    • Define the number of times a customer can earn a free product within a single order (indicated by "1" in the image).
    • If this setting is disabled in DealUp, customers will receive a gift for every corresponding trigger product they add to their cart.

Also apply discount for B2B customers (Marked “2” in the above image)

    • Turn on this setting to offer the discount to B2B customers. Once active, DealUp discount widgets will be visible to these users.

💡 This setting is compatible only with Shopify's native B2B accounts. If you use a third-party app to manage or label your B2B customers, DealUp will not apply to those accounts.

Step 7: Select Your Discount Combination Strategy

In this section, select which discount types from DealUp, Shopify, or third-party apps can be combined with your current discount. You can enable combinations with:

    • Product discounts
    • Order discounts
    • Shipping discounts

💡 Make sure to enable discount combinations in the other discount you want to pair with DealUp.

Step 8: Select Active Dates for Your DealUp Offer

Once created and saved, the DealUp discount activates automatically.

    • Start Date: To launch your discount later, schedule it by selecting your preferred date and time in DealUp.

    • End Date (Optional): Set an expiration date and time to automatically deactivate your DealUp discount after a specific period.

Step 9: Customizing Your Discount Text (Optional)

In the Override Default Text section, you can enter a custom heading for your discount. If you leave these fields empty, DealUp will show the default text instead.
